Leadership means the ability to influence the behaviour of others to influence the realization of a goal.
Leaders are required to have a vision, and to motivate the followers to want to achieve the visions.
According to Keith Davis, “Leadership is the ability to persuade others to seek defined objectives enthusiastically. It is the human factor which binds a group together and motivates it towards goals.”
It is an interpersonal process
It is a group process involving two or more people interacting with each other.
A leader is involved in shaping and moulding the behaviour of the group towards the accomplishment of organizational goals.
Leadership is situation bound. There is no best style of leadership. It all depends upon tackling the situation.
Leadership is required at all levels
A leader integrates and reconciles personal goals with organizational goals.
He solicits support from all.
As a friend, philosopher and guide -
- A leader must demonstrate the three-dimensional traits in him. He can be a friend by sharing the feelings, opinions and desires of people.
- He can be a philosopher by utilizing his intelligence and experience and thereby guiding the employees as and when the time requires.
- He can be a guide and secure their co-operation to achieve the goals by adopting a problem-solving approach.
